Why food?

1/3 of the food produced is wasted.That’s 279 kilos of food wasted every minute, while 17% of Mauritians live in food insecurity.

When food is lost or wasted, it’s not just the food that goes to waste. It’s also the water, the energy, the land and the labour used to grow, transform, transport, store and cook this food.

Economical

Food waste costs $750 billion to the world each year. Kitchens can waste up to 20% of food purchased.

For vulnerable people, food changes everything.

Poor nutrition impairs physical growth as well as psychological development reinforcing inequalities.

Time spent looking for food impairs parents and NGOs from focusing on their main activity.

Our SROI (Social Return On Investment) is the value of food redistributed per rupee spent on FoodWise’s operations. For every Rs 1 spent, FoodWise was able to redistribute Rs 4.60 in food value in 2021.

KGs in GHG emissions equivalent saved. Food waste drives climate change. In fact, one quarter of the global greenhouse gas emissions are produced by food waste. By saving 1 KG of food waste, we also save the equivalent of 2.5 KGs in GHG emissions.
